UNESCO ICDH [Into the Light: Memory of the World] Exhibition Description by Zone

Welcome to the ICDH Opening Special Exhibition.

The exhibition <Into the Light: Memory of the World> provides a special opportunity to explore the lessons of the past, and find inspiration and enlightenment for the future. 

Records from the past are said to be important and meaningful, but not many people know why that is. The Memory of the World collection is vast, and requires much background knowledge, which can make them hard to understand. As the Memory of the World may feel somewhat unfamiliar, we have likened these records to ‘light’ and mankind’s journey out of darkness. We bring this all to life through the medium of film and video that serve to guide us on this journey.

An essential element of the exhibition is ‘light.’ This light is an element that suggests the direction to move forward for those of us who are wandering in the dark. Iit also represents the Memory of the World for us in terms of the past, the present and the possibility of building a better future. 

Your journey through the Memory of the World exhibition will involve following the light that guides you through dark passages and five spaces or “Zones.” In each Zone we have created opportunities for you to feel the great moments contained in the Memory of the World, discover the connection with the times we are currently living in, and through this, understand the meaning of Memory of the World represented by light. 

As you begin your journey of enlightenment by following the light, think about how the Memory of the World has illuminated the world and left records for a brighter tomorrow.

With the International Center for Documentary Heritage under the auspices of UNESCO, let’s begin your journey, following the light in the darkness, to discover the value of Memory of the World that we must share and preserve.

Light against the Darkness

The first zone is <Light against the Darkness>.  In this space, you encounter the Memory of the World – humanity’s journey from darkness to light. Mankind has been leaving records that help us understand and share in order to overcome fear, ignorance, and disconnection. 

The Memory of the World has documented our journey from darkness to light through human history. Through this documentation, we give meaning to the complex history of the world. What do we mean by the Memory of the World and our journey from darkness? We find the answers in various fields of history such as language, religion, medicine, science, and history. 

Let’s take a look at the Memory of the World which contains the wisdom and enlightenment of mankind from the past, starting with cuneiform, the first written language in existence, and then on to Copernicus’ heliocentric theory that changed the world.

Light of the Changing Media

Zone 2, <Light of the Changing Media>, shows how the records of the past and present are interconnected. Although the form of recording has changed, the memory of humanity is the same. Beginning with leaving records on clay, leaves, bones, and trees, which are commonly found around us, records have evolved into a way of conveying one’s message in a more detailed, realistic, and lively manner. And now, records contain moving, living memories rather than static moments. 

This space shows various forms that make up the Memory of the World, and the spectrum of light changes depending on different angles. 

The medium that contains the records may be a tool to convey one’s message, but the medium itself can also be the message. In this zone, think about which medium you want to use to leave your memory and records.

Repository of Life and Memory

Our memories contain many moments and stories. And the records do too, as they contain our memories. They consist of stories about why these records were made, the stories themselves, and the places that contain them. All of them take on different forms. The Memory of the World, created by gathering these memories and records, will be reborn in digital form in this space. In the third space, <Repository of Light and Memory>, the Memory of the World created in different times and spaces meet in virtual space to create one work of art. 

Sammy Lee, a Canadian media artist based in the UK, uses her imagination and research, as well as game engines, neuroscience and other disciplines, to create a large format video that resonates on the screen like fireworks. Records, the embodiment of the past, meet modern media technology, demonstrating that the Memory of the World traverses time and space. Nowadays, more memories and experiences are being recorded through modern technology. In this era with overflowing data, this zone will make you think about the meaning of the Memory of the World that we must preserve and protect.

Light as Beacon of Hope

Where there is darkness, there is light. Our history has consisted of glorious and challenging moments. There were times of peace, coexistence, and development but also times of discrimination, war, and regression. 

However, rather than staying in the dark, we want to change and move forward into the light. We’ve tried to go beyond and this process of effort is seen in the form of records. The memories that you will encounter in this space are those moments and efforts.

The Memory of the World embodies UNESCO’s founding purposes: “freedom and human rights,” 

“international cooperation,” and “peace and security.”

※ To realize fundamental freedoms, human rights, the rule of law, and universal justice declared in the UN Charter, UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organisation) was founded to contribute to peace and security by promoting cooperation in the international community through education, science, and cultural exchanges between countries.

Light of the Future

This is the final space of the journey that began with you following the light. This space is empty. However, it is also a space filled with light and a space to be filled with your records. 

This is the most crucial space in the exhibition, providing time for personal reflection and participation in the show. Here you can leave your impressions or personal notes about the exhibition. Leave your record that can become a part of the history we will create and a bright light for the future. In this space, you can connect the past and present and build a bridge. 

The records you leave in this space will become part of the exhibition and will remain as a light for others along with the Memory of the World message to the future.

<세계기록유산, 인류의 빛이 되다> 전시는 인류의 기억이 담긴 세계기록유산을 통해 과거의 교훈을 탐구하고, 미래를 위한 영감과 깨달음을 얻을 수 있는 특별한 기회를 제공합니다.

과거의 기록이 중요하고 의미가 있다고 하지만, 그것이 왜 그런지에 대해 아는 사람은 많지 않습니다. 기록이 가지고 있는 내용은 방대하고 많은 배경적 지식을 요구하기에 이를 이해하기도 쉽지 않습니다. 다소 낯설게 느껴질 수 있는 세계기록유산이기에, 미디어의 시대로 대변되는 현재의 흐름을 반영하여 세계기록유산을 ‘빛’에 비유하고 어둠 속에서 밝게 보일 ‘영상’이라는 매체를 통해 구현하였습니다.

이 전시의 중요한 요소는 ‘빛’입니다. 이 빛은 어둠 속을 헤매고 있는 우리에게 앞으로 나아가야 할 방향을 제시해주는 요소이며, 과거의 기억을 통해 더 나은 미래를 만들고자 하는 현재의 우리에게 주는 세계기록유산이 남긴 의미를 나타내는 것이기도 합니다.

이제 여러분은 어두운 통로를 지나 빛으로 가득한 5개의 공간을 만나게 됩니다. 이 공간들을 통해 세계기록유산이 담고 있는 위대한 순간을 느끼고, 지금 우리가 살아가고 있는 시대와의 연관성을 발견하여, 이를 통해 빛으로 대표되는 세계기록유산의 의미에 대해 이해할 수 있도록 구성하였습니다.

빛을 따라 깨달음의 여정을 시작하면서, 세계기록유산이 지금까지 어떻게 세상을 더 밝게 비춰왔는지 생각해보고, 더 밝은 내일을 위해 여러분의 기록을 남겨보시기를 바랍니다.

Zone 1 어둠을 밝히는 빛: Light against the Darkness

어두운 통로를 지나 마주하게 되는 빛을 따라 만나게 되는 첫 번째 공간 <어둠을 밝히는 빛>입니다. 이 공간에서는 어둠 속에 있던 인류에게 빛이 되어준 세계기록유산을 만날 수 있습니다. 세상에 대한 두려움, 무지, 세상과의 단절 속에서 살아가던 우리는 사람과 세계에 대해 이해하고 공유하기 위해 기록을 남겨왔고, 그 과정에서 남겨진 세계기록유산은 인류 역사 속에서 어둠을 밝힌 빛과 같은 역할을 했습니다.

인류는 기록을 하면서 세상의 흐름에 의미를 부여하게 되었고, 비로소 세상의 흐름을 붙잡으며 살아가는 존재가 될 수 있었습니다. 이 공간에서 보여지는 빛은 세상에 대한 이해를 하게된 순간을 기록한 세계기록유산을 말합니다. 언어, 종교, 의학, 과학 등 역사 속 다양한 분야에서 어둠을 밝혀준 의미 있는 세계기록유산은 어떠한 것들이 있을까요.

현존하는 최초의 문자인 설형문자부터 세상을 바꾼 코페르니쿠스의 지동설에 이르기까지 과거 인류의 지혜와 깨달음이 담긴 세계기록유산을 알아보겠습니다.

Zone 2 변화하는 매체의 빛: Light of the Changing Media

두 번째 공간인 <변화하는 매체의 빛>에서는 과거의 기록과 현재의 기록이 어떻게 서로 연결되어 있는지 보여줍니다. 기록을 담아내는 형태는 달라졌지만 기록으로 남기고자 했던 인류의 기억은 하나였을 것입니다.  기록은 우리 주변에서 흔히 접할 수 있던 점토, 잎사귀, 뼈, 나무 등에 남기는 것을 시작으로 하여, 나아가 자신의 메시지를 보다 자세하고 사실적이며 생동감 있게 전달하는 방식으로 변화하고 있습니다. 그리고 이제는, 기록은 정지한 순간이 아닌 움직이고 살아있는 기억을 담고 있습니다.

이 공간에서는 각도에 따라 다양한 색을 보여주는 빛의 모습처럼 기억을 담는 매체로써 다양한 형태를 가지고 있는 세계기록유산을 보여줍니다.

기록을 담고 있는 매체는 단지 자신의 메시지를 전달하기 위한 도구일 수도 있겠지만, 그 매체 자체가 메시지이자 의미를 가질 수 있습니다. 이 공간은 어떠한 매체를 통해 자신의 기억을, 자신의 기록을 남길 것인지에 대해 생각할 수 있는 공간이 되길 바랍니다.

Zone 3 빛과 기억의 저장소: Repository of Light and Memory

우리의 기억은 많은 순간과 이야기를 담고 있습니다. 그리고 우리의 기억을 담고 있는 기록도 마찬가지 입니다. 그 기록들이 만들어진 이유, 기록들이 담고 있는 이야기, 그리고 기록들이 담겨있는 곳들. 이 모든 것이 다양한 모습을 하고 있습니다. 이러한 기억과 기록들이 모여 만들어지게 된 세계기록유산이 이 공간에서 디지털의 모습으로 다시 태어나게 됩니다. 세 번째 공간인 <빛과 기억의 저장소> 에서는 각기 다른 시간과 공간에서 만들어진 세계기록유산이 가상 공간에서 만나 하나의 작품으로 만들어집니다.

영국에서 활동하는 캐나다 미디어아티스트 쌔미리 (Sammy Lee) 작가는 게임엔진과 두뇌학 등 다양한 학문을 바탕으로 작가의 상상력과 리서치를 활용하여 불꽃놀이처럼 화면에 울려 퍼지는 대형 이미지 영상을 구현하였습니다. 과거로 대변되는 기록이 현대 기술인 대형 미디어월에서 빛의 형태로 구현됨으로써 시간과 공간을 넘는 세계기록유산의 모습을 보여줍니다. 현대 기술을 통해 더 많은 기억과 경험이 기록으로 남겨지고 있는 현재. 이 기록의 홍수 속에서 우리가 꼭 보존하고 지켜야 할 세계기록유산은 어떤 의미가 있는지 생각할 수 있는 시간이 되시길 바랍니다.

Zone 4 희망의 빛: Light as Beacon of Hope

빛이 있으면 어둠이 있듯이, 우리의 역사도 영광의 순간만 있었던 것은 아니었습니다. 평화, 공존, 발전의 시간도 있었지만, 차별, 전쟁, 후퇴의 시간도 있었습니다. 인류는 그렇게 서로에게 힘을 주는 존재이기도 하였지만, 동시에 상처를 주고 아픔을 주는 존재인 채로 오랜 시간을 보냈습니다. 

하지만 우리는 그 어두운 순간에서 머물지 않고, 이를 적극적으로 바꾸고 앞으로 나아가고자 하였습니다. 이를 넘어서기 위하여 노력하였고 이러한 노력의 과정들이 기록의 형태로 우리에게 전해지고 있습니다. 이 공간에서 만나게 될 세계기록유산들은 바로 그러한 순간과 노력을 담은 것들입니다.

여러분은 <희망의 빛> 공간에서는 유네스코의 창립 목적인 “자유와 인권”, “국제사회의 협력”, 그리고 “평화와 안전”을 담고 있는 대표적인 세계기록유산을 만나보실 수 있습니다.

※ 유네스코 창립목적 : 유엔 헌장에서 선언된 기본적 자유와 인권, 법치 그리고 보편적인 정의 구현을 위하여 국가간 교육, 과학 그리고 문화교류를 통한 국제사회의 협력을 촉진하여 평화와 안전에 기여한다.

Zone 5 미래의 빛: Light of the Future

빛을 따라 시작된 여정의 마지막 공간입니다. 이 공간은 비어있는 공간입니다. 하지만 빛으로 가득 채워진 공간이기도 하고, 여러분의 기록으로 채워질 공간이기도 합니다.

전시에서 가장 중요한 공간인 <미래의 빛>은 여러분께 개인적인 사유와 전시 참여의 시간을 제공합니다. 이곳에서 여러분은 전시에 대한 감상이나 개인적 기록을 남길 수 있습니다. 우리가 만들어갈 역사의 한 부분이자 미래를 밝게 비추는 빛이 될 수 있는 여러분 만의 기록을 남겨보세요. 이 공간 속에서 여러분은 과거와 현재를 연결하고, 미래로 이어지는 다리를 만들 수 있어요. 

이 공간에 여러분이 남긴 기록은 다시 전시의 한 부분이 되어, 세계기록유산과 함께 다른 이에게 빛으로 남을 수 있을 거예요.
