“Humming (singing through the nose) comes out when emotions cannot be fully expressed with lyrics. I call it musical doodling. For this piece, I wanted to express humming through drawings.”
Singer and artist Kwon Ji-an (known by her stage name Solbi) will participate in the ‘SoHo’s Got Seoul’ exhibition held at Park West Gallery in SoHo, New York until March 1st. She will showcase a series of five works themed around ‘humming.’ In anticipation of the exhibition, Kwon Ji-an explained, “I started the humming series to express longing for my father who passed away in 2021. In this exhibition, I’ve displayed works depicting themes of love, the Alps, and Lake Geneva.”
She mainly uses a technique of adding rhythmic lines by hand with acrylic paint on the landscapes that left a strong impression on her. This time, she applied the same method to create these artworks.
The exhibition features the participation of various popular culture artists, including Shinhwa member Lee Minwoo, actor KO Jun, film director Shim Hyungjoon, and installation artist Choi Jaeyong. The collective art group ‘GoGo Salon’ members contribute a total of over 30 artworks. Lee Minwoo’s painting portrays his early childhood, capturing moments of his tearful mother in poverty and himself embracing her. He stated, “Drawing helped me overcome difficult times.”
The curator Kim Seungmin’s concept for the exhibition provides an exciting opportunity to see works from each artist that resonate with their emotions. The exhibition also includes renowned artworks from Toulouse-Lautrec, Renoir, Picasso, Joan Miró, and Albrecht Dürer.
